Remember this iconic moment?

This is the Apollo mission control room during Apollo 13. The average age of the flight controllers who brought the crew home safely was 26. Twenty-somethings, many fresh out of college, sat at those consoles, crunching real-time data, making split-second decisions, and confidently declaring “GO” while their more senior (and far more risk-averse) leadership watched.

The older generation had built the rockets the hard way. They knew every weld, every valve, every possible failure point from hands-on experience. But when the crisis hit, they trusted the kids with the newfangled computers to say whether the plan would work.

We saved three lives because the young engineers won that argument.

Fast-forward to 2025 in the oil & gas industry, and we’re having the exact same generational debate. Only this time it’s about whether to keep “driving the truck” or finally build the AI control room.

Break-fix Heroes (Senior Operator Edition)

Many senior facility operators and field veterans grew up in the era of reactive maintenance. Pump goes down? Compressor alarm? H2S leak? You got the call, grabbed your FRs and toolkit, jumped in the F-250, drove hours to a remote pad, sometimes in a blizzard or 110°F heat, and fixed the problem with your own hands.

There’s pride in that. There’s heroism. You felt the satisfaction of being the one who kept the field producing. Downtime was accepted as part of the game, and “boots on the ground” gave you certainty.

We get it. We really do. But that model is the oilfield equivalent of inspecting every rivet on the Saturn V by hand the morning of launch.

AI Control Room: Gen Z Edition

Today’s younger operators and engineers, Gen Z and young Millennials, didn’t grow up waiting for things to break. They grew up with IoT sensors, predictive analytics, and AI that flags issues before production is lost.

Gen Z don’t want to drive four hours round-trip to tighten a loose connection that AI already identified and could have auto-isolated. They want to sit in a modern integrated operations center (or distributed from home) and oversee hundreds or even thousands of wells, compressors, tanks, and pipelines with real-time visual and empirical intelligence.

Role of Visual AI

The real risk today isn’t that AI-powered RMM will fail. The real risk is that we keep sending crews on unnecessary truck rolls, exposing them to road hazards, burning OPEX, flaring gas during downtime, frustrating regulators, and pushing our best young talent out the door because they didn’t sign up to spend half their lives on dirt roads.

Gen Z isn’t asking for AI because it’s shiny and new. They’re demanding it because they know they’ll inherit these assets. They want systems that scale safely, reduce emissions, and maximize recovery long after the current generation has retired.

“Go/No-Go” Poll, Again

Just like in that Apollo control room, the decision ultimately sits with senior leadership.

But here’s the question every oil & gas VP of Operations should ask themselves:

When your youngest, sharpest engineers, the ones who will own this industry in a decade, are pounding the table and saying “GO” on AI-powered remote monitoring with real visual intelligence…

…will you trust them enough to light the candle?

Because if history is any guide, the future belongs to the kids in the control room.
